A practical guide to printing QR codes
Choose the right format, size and contrast before the first print run.
A QR code is a grid of modules, not a decorative picture. A sharp, high-contrast print with enough empty space around it is more useful than an elaborate code that only scans on your screen.
1. Keep the quiet border
Standard Model 2 QR codes need a blank margin four modules wide on every side. DirectQRKit includes it in the export. Do not crop it away or place a caption, photograph or cut line inside it.
2. Work in physical units
Version 3 has 29 modules across. With four blank modules on each side, the full artwork is 37 modules wide. At 400 dots per inch and four printer dots per module, each module is 0.254 mm. The complete width is 37 × 0.254 = 9.398 mm.
This follows the geometry in DENSO WAVE’s official sizing guidance. It is a geometric example, not a promise that a 9.398 mm code will scan on every phone. Our conservative 0.4 mm/module guideline gives 14.8 mm for the same grid. Use the print-size calculator for your code and printer.
3. Match the file to the job
| Format | Useful for | Check |
|---|---|---|
| SVG | Design and scaling | Keep the square aspect ratio |
| PNG | Slides and image layouts | Use enough pixels; avoid blur |
| Signs, tags and labels | Print at actual size | |
| JPG | Systems that require JPEG | Compression can soften edges |
| EPS | Compatible print workflows | Confirm the printer accepts EPS |
SVG/EPS modules remain vector shapes. An uploaded logo or styled caption can be raster artwork within the file. The print-layout PDF preserves physical page dimensions; printer scaling, browser headers and printer margins remain under your print settings.
4. Use decoration carefully
Prefer dark modules on a light background. A numerical contrast check cannot predict reflective packaging, transparent materials or weak ink. A logo hides part of the grid: use high error correction, keep it small and test again. Error correction repairs some damaged codewords; its percentage is not permission to cover that percentage of the image.
5. Test the final thing
- Read the exported file with an independent decoder.
- Print one sample on the intended paper or material.
- Scan it with several target devices at the intended distance and lighting.
- Check the result itself: address, phone number, contact fields or event time.
